We choose U-Haul’s U-Box service to move from Seattle to New Jersey and here’s why
I always get asked “what’s your favorite skill move?”
It’s probably a toss up between an elastico and scissors, but using U-Haul’s U-Box service resulted in the best move ever! House move that is, lol
This pandemic has really forced AJ and I to assess our future and ultimately decide to move closer to family and New York City for work opportunities.
We knew it wouldn’t be easy and one of the main challenges would be getting all of our belongings across the country safely, efficiently, and affordably.
That’s when we thought of U-Haul. We’ve used U-Haul before for local self-moves and found out they have a moving service called, ‘U-Box’
Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like - you fill the U-Box container(s) with all your belongings and U-Haul ships it to your destination for you or stores it if you need storage or extra time - easy as that!
For transparency, we were lucky enough to get a social media campaign with U-Haul to cover the cost of our move, but we chose U-Haul because it’s the brand we trust most!

You may need a permit for street parking if placing the U-Box on your street if your city requires one
Only one size U-Box that fits about 1.5 rooms, but you can get as many as needed
We would absolutely recommend this service. We had the box dropped off a few days before our move out date and hit the road for our own road trip, leaving the box for U-Haul to pick up. Packing the box tightly took a little figuring out, but was really not that difficult - Here are some things we fit in one U-Box:
2 Queen Size Mattresses and 1 Bed Frame
1 Full Size Couch
1 Large Dresser with Full Drawers
1 Living Room Chair
Over 20 Medium and Large Boxes full of clothes, kitchenware, books, and more!
You might be worried about putting all that stuff in a box and shipping it, but you can book insurance for your belongings! We opted not to and all of our stuff was delivered exactly as we packed it :) If you’re unsure about how much you can pack or what packing supplies you may need click here
Ultimately, U-Box worked out perfect for us. We opted for only one U-Box, and packed our belongings ourselves. We needed a street parking permit in Seattle to place the box on our road, but U-Haul got us Moving Help to deliver the U-Box on a trailer, which costs a little more in Seattle. You can also tow the trailer yourself at no additional cost.. All-in-all, our move would’ve been a little over $2,000 to go from Seattle to New Jersey — absolutely worth it!
